Why do we need Attachment Aware Classrooms?

  • Attachment has to do with children’s most fundamental need to be in the presence of a kind, committed, and connected adult with whom they share a relationship. Without this, they cannot feel safe. This means that, throughout the school day, children are looking to their teachers as secondary attachment figures in the absence of the parent. When teachers are attachment informed, they are better able to understand and be sensitive to the psychological and emotional needs of children, providing more attuned and supportive guidance. This secure teacher-child relationship enhances sense of belonging and resilience, and increases engagement and exploration in the classroom. This in turn leads to improved overall well-being and academic outcomes for children.

  • Attachment awareness in the classroom significantly benefits teachers by fostering a nurturing and supportive learning environment. Understanding attachment principles enhances teachers’ reflective capacity and the ability to recognize and respond to the emotional needs of their students. This leads to more effective classroom management and stronger teacher-student relationships which, in turn, leads to increased student cooperation, reduced behavioural issues, and a more positive and engaged classroom atmosphere. This means enhanced emotional security for students, greater job satisfaction for teachers, and increased staff retention in schools.

  • Parents of today are more informed and conscious about their parenting choices than ever. As part of this, there is a growing awareness of attachment theory and the critical role that secure attachment has to play in various social, emotional, and educational outcomes for children. With this increasing awareness, there is a growing need for schools to integrate more attachment informed practices into the daily classroom setting and overarching wellbeing programs. This enables schools and educators to better support students’ overall social and emotional development. By bridging the gap between home and school, parents can feel confident that their child is safe and supported in the classroom, not just in the home.
